Jonathan Hastings of Grove City, winner of the 2010 Fools 25k, also bettered the old CR with a time of 4:17:30.

Twenty-two year-old Sandi Nypaver of Parma Heights, winner of the 2010 Mohican 100 and Grindstone 100, led all women in 4:42:27 and a course record by 14 minutes. A close race developed as three women -- Liza Canowitz of Albany, Nypaver, and Lee Conner of Cleveland -- arrived at the halfway mark within 95 seconds of each other and defending champion Beth Woodward another minute back. Meredith Hale of Westlake rounded out a female quartet that beat the previous 50k CR (previously 4:56:55 by Beth Woodward, 2009.)

Justin Hayes of Akron (1:55:34) and Sarah Lopienski of Columbus (2:20:05) claimed victories in the 25k race.

In all, 162 runners completed 25-km and 116 finished the entire 50-km.

The strong community of NE Ohio trail and ultrarunners was on full display as nearly 90 volunteers stepped up during race week and race day to make the Fools Run happen. The Fools Run is only days away and plans are shaping up for a great day on the trails. The following message will help convey race information to you and hopefully answer any questions you might have.

ENTRANT LIST: Please review the entrant list to ensure your name spelling, age, gender, and race distance is correct.

TRANSFERS of entry are not allowed.

PARKING & CARPOOL INCENTIVE: We have a limited number of parking spots at Pine Hollow and the other two lots along Quick Rd. Please arrive early as you may have to park as far as 0.5 mile away from the start line. Those who share the ride and carpool are eligible to enter the drawing for prizes.

Link to DRIVING DIRECTIONS

PRE-RACE BRIEFING: In an effort to reduce my pre-race instructions at the start line, I have recorded a video presentation of the pre-race instructions. The morning of the race is exciting. Who wants to listen to important pre-race instructions 10 minutes before the run? It is my hope that you will take a few minutes and watch the video that will be posted on the front page of the website. I hope to save time for everyone and allow you to focus on your run. You will receive an email update when the video is posted on the website. (ETA: Wednesday a.m.)

WELL-MARKED COURSE: I assure that the course will be well-marked. The map is helpful, but you need not know the course to participate in the Fools Trail Run.

BE PREPARED for cold temperature, wet weather and possibly mud. The Sunday forecast (as of Tuesday) calls for cool temperatures and a chance of snow. But I don't expect snow accumulation. Frozen, firm ground will be a welcome to those wanting to run fast. Remember that Pine Hollow has no pavilion or chairs. Bring a folding chair to enjoy the post-race festivities at the finish line.

NO ALCOHOL is permitted (nor will be tolerated) at the Fools Run.

PARKING: The NPS has assured me that Pine Hollow gate will be opened by 6 AM. While there is plenty of parking space, you might arrive after Pine Hollow fills up. There are two other lots along Quick Rd: Crow Foot Gully and Little Meadow. It is a short walk from any of these lots - plan accordingly to arrive early.

(Note: All three of the parking lots are along the first 1/2 mile of the Fools Run course. 50k runners will have a chance to pass their vehicle at the start of the second loop.)

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

PACKET PICK-UP: We ask that each runner picks up their own packet. No picking up for friends. (Exception for spouses.) If you are unable to attend on Friday or Saturday, pick-up is available on the day of race. Hours:

- Friday, March 25, from 5-8 p.m. at Vertical Runner
- Saturday, March 26, from 12-5 p.m. at the Vertical Runner
- Sunday, March 27, from 6:15-7:15 at Pine Hollow.

Packets are not available prior to the announced times on Friday and Saturday. Vertical Runner is located at 112 N. Main St. in Hudson, OH.

Pre-race briefing: 7:20 AM (at the starting line)
Race starts: 7:30 AM
Course closes: 4:30 PM (9 hour time limit)

VERTICAL RUNNER DISCOUNT: Use your bib number to receive a 15% discount on a purchase of trail shoes at the Vertical Runner store in Hudson. Offer expires on April 15.

VOLUNTEERS: If you have family or friends who are volunteering and not assigned a position, they should check-in on the roster at Pine Hollow on Sunday morning.

IMPORTANT RACE INFO:

** RUNNER CHECK-IN: In addition to packet pick-up, there is a separate runner check-in at the starting line. The purpose is to ensure for complete runner accountability. Please check-in by showing your bib number (pinned visibly on front) to the starter at the start line, starting at 6:30 AM.

CARPOOL INCENTIVE & RAFFLE DRAWING: If you shared a ride to the race, present to the starter the "Random Drawing Coupon" from your bib number. We will draw numbers for prizes, including two pairs of North Face running shoes.

BIB NUMBERS DISPLAYED: Your bib number will be recorded at aid station checkpoints. To avoid delay, clearly display your bib number on your front.

CHIP TIMING: On the back of your bib is a computer chip. PLEASE DO NOT FOLD YOUR BIB. Display on front of shirt or shorts without folding.

50k/25k DECLARATION: All runners have selected a race distance - either 50k or 25k. Those registered for 50k can stop after 25k and receive a finishing time but are not eligible for 25k awards.

SPECIAL NOTE ON AWARDS: Awards are given to the top runners. To be eligible for race awards, you must finish the race you signed up for. (I.e. If you are in the 50k race and decide to stop after 25k, you are NOT ELIGIBLE to win the 25k race award.)

TRUXELL ROAD CROSSING: This road crossing is the most dangerous spot on the course. Runners DO NOT have right of way and should YIELD TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC. A volunteer will be there to assist but they are not authorized to stop vehicular traffic.

WATER BOTTLES: In an effort to minimize paper waste, runners are encouraged to carry a water bottle. Aid station volunteers will be ready to refill your bottle with water or Heed and keep you moving down the trail.

The FIRST AID STATION is 5.2 MILES at Happy Days parking lot, then about every 3 miles thereafter. Plan accordingly. Click here for more aid station and checkpoint information.

AID STATIONS will be stocked with water, Heed (the carbohydrate/electrolyte beverage by Hammer Nutrition), cola, PB&J sandwiches, pretzels, and various other snack foods. If you want a special item, plan to carry yourself.

HAMMER GELS and ENDUROLYTES will be available at aid stations to 50k runners on their second 25k loop. Again, if you have special needs please plan to carry your own supplies.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS: The course is 25k (15.7 miles) of unique trails starting and finishing at Pine Hollow. 50k runners will repeat an identical 25k loop to complete the entire 50k course. The color codes on the map indicate the order of trails. If you are new to the area, don't miss the Ledges Overlook near mile 10. A short alternate path will be marked to lead you to one of the most scenic views of the Cuyahoga Valley. After returning to Kendall Lake near the 12.5 mile mark, you will pass near Pine Hollow at the bottom of the sledding hill. This is good spot for spectators to watch the action. The course ends with the 3.5 miles of the Salt Run trail. Save some energy for the finish - The Fools Run is known for its final challenging ascent to the finish line at Pine Hollow.

COURSE CHANGES: The map on the website shows the current course. There is only one minor change at Haskell Run. The course will use the western half of Haskell Run, routing through the grass field in front of Happy Days lodge. This change avoids the driveway at the Lodge and will minimize the chance of running into park visitors at the kiosk. Use the grass field in both directions as you enter/exit the tunnel.

SHARE THE TRAILS: At all times we are guests of the CVNP and we do not have exclusive use of the trails. During your run, yield to other park visitors and please do not run over or endanger other users of the trail.

POST-RACE SOUP is provided to all participants. Please save the long tear-off tag on your bib as your food coupon.

RESULTS will be posted onsite and on the website by Monday morning, April 6. Special thanks to timing service provided by Chaney Events Management.
Please visit the website for the latest information.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Please arrive early and in time for the pre-race briefing at 7:20 a.m.

Lloyd Thomas
Race Director
http://fools50k.org

50K AWARDS:
All 50k finishers receive a commemorative hand-made mug. The second year race will be held on March 28 starting and finishing at Pine Hollow in the Cuyahoga Valley.

Remembering last year, clear skies and a brilliant sun produced a memorable day for NE Ohio trailrunning. The race became an instant hit with 192 Fools, including 67 in the 50k, conquering the trails of the CVNP's Virginia Kendall park. Had the event been held one day later on Monday, runners would have faced a snowy, muddy mess.

After rave reviews from last year, no course changes are expected for this year's race. The route remains a diverse 25-km (15.7 miles) loop of the Kendall Lake area of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park comprised of the Cross Country, Lake, Ledges, Boston Run, Haskell Run, Pine Grove, and Salt Run Trails. The 50-km runners repeat the entire 25-km circuit.

Plan to get dirty. Seasonal average temperatures, ranging between a low of 30F and high of 55F, combined with muddy, wet conditions are expected on this course that features little to no pavement. (Estimated at 99.9% pavement-free.)

Starting and finishing from Pine Hollow, the 25-km route follows a color-coded course that offers a variety of surfaces. Runners will contend with grass meadows, pine groves, and some rocks combined with a descent into and climb out of the valley. Course highlights include the grassy terrain of the Little Meadow and Cross Country Trails, the rocks in and around the Ledges Trail, and the pines of the Boston Run and Pine Grove Trails before returning to Kendall Lake to tackle the Salt Run.

Out-of-town guests will not want to miss the Ledges Overlook vista near the 10 mile mark at the southern end of the Ledges Trail. After a view across the valley, runners experience a dramatic shift in scenery with a stair decent into the greenery of the Pine Grove.

Near the Pine Hollow finish line, the landscape provides a natural amphitheater to gather and watch the action. Spectators are treated to a special viewing area of the 20-km mark where the course passes the sledding hill within view of the finish. The last trail the Fools face is the often muddy Salt Run. This final 5-km stretch includes a descent to the valley floor followed by a two-mile climb up and out of the valley. I look forward to greeting each finisher as they cross the line.

Defending champions and course-record holders Mike Ryan of Strongsville (4:36) and Beth Woodward of Orrville (4:56) lead the 50k field. The Fools Run is only days away and plans are shaping up for a great day on the trails. The following message will help convey race information to you, help minimize my pre-race briefing, and hopefully answer any questions you might have.

I've run the course several times since the last update and its looking great. The course map shown on the website is accurate, except for one minor change (noted below.)

WELL-MARKED COURSE: I assure you that the course will be well-marked. The map is helpful, but you need not know the course to participate in the Fools Run.

BE PREPARED for wet weather and mud. The Sunday forecast (as of Wednesday night) calls for cool temperatures and a chance of rain, so be prepared for wet weather. Pine Hollow has no pavilion or chairs.

PACKET PICK-UP: Saturday, March 27, from 12-5 PM at the Vertical Runner in Hudson or Sunday, March 28, from 6:15-7:15 at Pine Hollow. Packets are not available prior to 12 PM on Saturday.

(To redeem your discount earlier, let the staff know your name.)

VOLUNTEERS: If you have family or friends who are volunteering, they should check-in on the roster at Pine Hollow on Sunday morning.

IMPORTANT RACE INFO:

** RUNNER CHECK-IN and RAFFLE DRAWING: In addition to acket pick-up, there is a separate runner check-in at the starting line. The purpose is to ensure for complete runner accountability. Please check-in by showing your bib number (pinned visibly on front) to the starter, starting at 7:00 AM.

RAFFLE DRAWING: We will use the names on Starter's check-in roster to Raffle away two pairs of North Face trail shoes. Raffle winners will be posted post-race.

BIB NUMBERS DISPLAYED: Your bib number will be recorded at aid station checkpoints. To avoid delay, clearly display your bib number in front (Yes, you can fold your number as long as it is visible.)

BIB PULL-TAGS will be pulled at the finish line. Please do not discard.

The FIRST AID STATION is 5.2 MILES at Happy Days parking lot, then about every 3.5 miles thereafter.

Please save the tear-off tag on your bib as your food coupon.

RESULTS will be posted on the website by Monday morning, April 6.

Please visit the website for useful information such as driving directions.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Please arrive early and in time for the pre-race briefing.

Lloyd Thomas
Race Director
http://fools50k.org

50K AWARDS:

- 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Overall, Man and Woman (6)
- 1st place age 40-49, Man and Woman (2)
- 1st place age 50-59, Man and Woman (2)
- 1st place age 60+, Man and Woman (2)

25K AWARDS:

- 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Overall, Man and Woman (6)
- 1st place age 40-49, Man and Woman (2)
- 1st place age 50+, Man and Woman (2)

(Note: Limit one prize per person. This revised map includes a few changes to the old map due to the closure of (a portion of) the Lake Trail near the dam. The Lake Trail is closed until May and has caused a re-routing of the original course.

Long story short: The course will be well marked on race day. The revised course is an improvement that provides better flow, thus enhancing your Fools Run experience.

In essence, the order of the Cross Country and Salt Run Trails have been reversed. The race starts out towards Cross Country (via Little Meadow) and will finish with Salt Run. The Lake Trail detour routes around the east and south side of Kendall Lake in order to avoid the closed section. The rest of the Fools Run, north of Truxell Road, remains the same as previously shown on the map.

The Lake Trail detour: Do not cross any barricades on the Lake Trail. A portion of the Lake Trail is closed near the dam and is hazardous to cross. The Lake Trail detour begins at the south end of Kendall Lake, up the grass hill near Pine Hollow, and down the sledding hill to rejoin Salt Run.

Summary of course changes:
- The course starts towards the Cross Country Trail, via the path to Little Meadow
- At the end of Cross Country, turn right on Lake Trail towards Truxell Rd.
- After crossing Truxell Rd., the entire course north of Truxell remains the same as previous version of the course map
- Upon returning across Truxell Rd, turn left on Lake Trail and continue around east end of Kendall Lake (Aid station where Lake and Cross Country trails intersect)
- At the Lake Trail barricade, take detour towards sledding hill and reconnect to Salt Run
- The 25k course finishes with a counter-clockwise loop of Salt Run Trail
- Start/finish remains at Pine Hollow

The course will be well marked on race day. Color codes indicate the order of route.

See below for a table of course distances/checkpoints.

2009 Course

The color coding illustrates the route:

Start @ Pine Hollow

Leg 1, YELLOW:
- Path to Little Meadow
- Cross Country Trail
- Lake Trail
- Cross Truxell Rd.
- Connector to Ledges Trail
- Ledges Trail (west ½)
- Haskell Run

HAPPY DAYS AID STATION (North of Rte 303) - 5.2 miles

Leg 2, BLUE:
- Boston Run Trail (counterclockwise)

HAPPY DAYS AID STATION - 8.4 miles

Leg 3, PURPLE:
- Haskell Run
- Ledges Trail (east ½)
- Pine Grove Trail (counter-clockwise)
- Connector to Kendall Lake
(cross Truxell Rd.)
- Lake Trail (east side)

KENDALL LAKE AID STATION (where Cross Country and Lake Trail intersects) - 12.0 miles

Leg 4, ORANGE:
- Lake Trail (south side)
- Lake Trail detour
- Salt Run Trail (counter-clockwise)

25k FINISH at Pine Hollow

PINE HOLLOW AID STATION - 15.7 miles

Repeat entire course for 50k

Click map to download.

<img style="float:left; The Fools Run is a few days away and plans are shaping up for a great day on the trails.

The Sunday forecast (as of Tuesday night) looks good, but be prepared for wet weather. Pine Hollow has no pavilion or chairs.

Packet Pick-up: Saturday, April 4, from 2-6 PM at the Vertical Runner in Hudson or Sunday, April 5, from 6:15-7:15 at Pine Hollow. Packets are not available prior to 2 PM on Saturday.

Pre-race briefing: 7:20 AM (at the starting line)
Race starts: 7:30 AM
Course closes: 4:30 PM (9 hour time limit)

VERTICAL RUNNER DISCOUNT: Use your bib number to receive a 15% discount on your next purchase at the Vertical Runner store in Hudson. Offer good in the month of April.

VOLUNTEERS: If you have family or friends who are volunteering, they should check-in on the roster at Pine Hollow on Sunday morning.

Important race info:

BIB NUMBERS DISPLAYED: Your bib number will be recorded at aid station checkpoints. To avoid delay, clearly display your bib number in front (Yes, you can fold your number as long as it is visible.)

50k/25k DECLARATION: All runners have selected a race distance - either 25k or 50k. After race starts, you can choose to change the distance when you pass the 25k finish line by informing the timer at the finish line.

SPECIAL NOTE ON AWARDS: Awards are given to the top runners. To be eligible for race awards, you must finish the race you signed up for. (I.e. If you are in the 50k race and decide to stop after 25k, you are NOT ELIGIBLE to win the 25k race award.)

WRTR SERIES POINTS: All 25k and 50k finishers listed in the results will receive points in the WRTR series. Visit http://wrtr.org for more information.

TRUXELL ROAD CROSSING: This road crossing is the most dangerous spot on the course. Runners DO NOT have right of way and should yield to vehicular traffic.

WATER BOTTLES: In an effort to minimize paper waste, runners are encouraged to carry a water bottle. Aid station volunteers will be ready to refill your bottle with water or Heed and keep you moving down the trail.

The FIRST AID STATION is 5.2 MILES at Happy Days parking lot, then about every 3.5 miles thereafter.

In your race packet, you will receive two HAMMER GELS and one packet of ENDUROLYTES for your personal use. Aid stations will not have these items.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS: The course is 25k of unique trails starting and finishing at Pine Hollow. Save some energy for the finish - The Fools Run will be remembered for the final challenging ascent to the finish line at Pine Hollow.

RESULTS will be posted on the website by Monday morning, April 6.

WRTR SERIES STANDINGS will be updated by the end of next week.

Please visit the website for useful information such as driving directions.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Please arrive early and in time for the pre-race briefing.

Lloyd Thomas
http://fools50k.org

Wait List info

Registration is closed.

All additional entries will be held and names will be placed on the wait list in the order received.
